The summer sun blazed over the island of Samos, but in the cool shade of the temple precinct, a man was committing what some would call heresy. Aristarchus of Samos, mathematician and astronomer, had spent years measuring shadows, tracking the moon's phases, and calculating the impossible. Now, sometime around 270 BCE, he was ready to announce what his calculations demanded: the Earth was not the center of the universe.
The idea was audacious beyond measure. Every Greek child knew that the Earth stood still while the celestial sphere—carrying the fixed stars—rotated around it. Aristotle himself had declared it so. The evidence seemed obvious: we feel no motion beneath our feet, stones fall straight down, birds are not swept away by a spinning world.
Yet Aristarchus had done the mathematics. By carefully observing the angle between the sun and moon during a half-moon phase, he had attempted to calculate their relative distances. His measurements were imprecise—he concluded the sun was roughly 19 times farther than the moon, when the true figure is closer to 400—but the implication was staggering.
