In a modest courtyard overlooking the wine-dark Aegean, a man in his middle years held a bronze disc to the sky, its surface etched with careful gradations. Aristarchus of Samos was about to commit what some would call blasphemy.
It was approximately 280 BCE, and the Greek world believed what seemed obvious: the Earth sat immobile at the center of the cosmos, while the sun, moon, and stars wheeled around it in crystalline spheres. This was the universe of Aristotle, elegant and ego-affirming. Humanity stood at the heart of creation.
But Aristarchus had been calculating. He had measured the angular distance between the sun and moon during a half-moon phase, when the three bodies formed a right triangle. His geometry was impeccable, even if his instruments were crude. The sun, he determined, was vastly larger than the Earth—perhaps eighteen to twenty times the moon's distance away. And here was the thought that seized him: why would something so enormous orbit something so small?
The logic was devastating in its simplicity. The sun must be the center. The Earth must move.
