In Alexandria's Museum, a philosopher turned emptiness into physics
A Greek philosopher's simple experiments with air and vessels launched the empirical study of physics.
The glass vessel sat on the marble table, catching the Mediterranean light that streamed through the colonnades of Alexandria's great Museum. Strato of Lampsacus, the man they called 'the Physicist,' held a thin reed in his weathered hands, his students gathered close in the late summer heat of 287 BCE.
'Watch,' he commanded, 'and tell me what you see.'
He submerged the vessel in a basin of water, then carefully inserted the reed through a small opening at the top. As he blew gently into the tube, bubbles erupted from beneath—air, visibly escaping from what his predecessors had insisted was already empty space.
Aristotle had declared that nature abhors a vacuum, that true emptiness was impossible. But Strato, who had tutored the young Ptolemy II before assuming leadership of the Lyceum in Athens, was not content with philosophical pronouncements. He demanded proof that could be seen, touched, measured.
