On Samos, a Lone Greek Astronomer Proposed What Would Take 1,800 Years to Prove
Nearly 1,800 years before Copernicus, a Greek astronomer on Samos correctly deduced that Earth orbits the Sun.
The morning light fell soft upon the harbor of Samos, where fishing boats rocked gently against their moorings and the smell of salt mingled with woodsmoke from the town. But in a modest stone house overlooking the Aegean, Aristarchus of Samos was not watching the boats. He was watching the sky—and what he saw there would make him, in the words of a later age, the most dangerous thinker in Greece.
It was approximately 270 BCE, and Aristarchus had just completed calculations that defied everything his civilization believed. Using nothing but geometry, the angular diameter of the Moon during a lunar eclipse, and the patience of a man possessed, he had determined that the Sun was vastly larger than the Earth—perhaps three hundred times larger, he estimated (the true figure is over a million, but his method was sound). And here was the heresy: why would something so immense orbit something so small?
The answer, Aristarchus concluded, was that it didn't. The Earth moved around the Sun.
