What if your entire city threw a birthday party with bonfires you could JUMP over?
Rome's Super Birthday Party: The Parilia Festival!
How ancient Romans celebrated their city's awesome founding
Ancient Romans threw epic birthday parties for their city with bonfires and cake!
Imagine a birthday party so big that an entire city celebrates together! That's exactly what happened every April 10th (and into April 21st) in ancient Rome during the Parilia festival!
The Romans believed their amazing city was founded way back in 753 BCE, and boy, did they know how to party! The Parilia started as a celebration for Pales, the goddess who protected shepherds and their fluffy sheep. But it grew into Rome's unofficial birthday bash!
Here's the cool part: Romans would jump over bonfires! They believed the smoke and flames would wash away bad luck and make them super clean for the new year. Can you imagine leaping over crackling flames while your friends cheered you on?
Farmers would decorate their barns with pretty green branches and make special cakes for their animals. Yes, even the cows and sheep got treats! They'd sprinkle water mixed with milk on their livestock and burn sweet-smelling herbs.
