The Day Explorers Found an Amazing Island Paradise!
When Dutch sailors stumbled upon Easter Island and its giant stone heads
Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen discovered Easter Island and its mysterious giant stone statues!
Imagine sailing across the biggest ocean on Earth for months, seeing nothing but water everywhere. Then suddenly — LAND! That's exactly what happened to Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen and his crew on April 10, 1722!
Roggeveen was leading three ships across the Pacific Ocean, searching for a mysterious land people called 'Terra Australis.' But instead, he found something even cooler — a tiny island covered with GIANT STONE STATUES!
These massive carved heads, called Moai, stood as tall as a four-story building! Some weighed as much as 10 elephants! Can you imagine the sailors' faces when they saw nearly 900 of these stone giants staring out at the ocean?
Roggeveen named the island 'Easter Island' because they arrived on Easter Sunday. But the people who lived there called it 'Rapa Nui,' which means 'The Navel of the World.'
💡 The largest Moai statue ever carved was 72 feet tall — that's taller than a seven-story building — but it was never finished or moved!
