What if YOU had to share being king or queen with someone else?
The Day a Queen Became an Empress!
How a tiny island nation built the biggest empire ever
William and Mary became co-rulers of England and gave people more rights than ever before!
Picture this: It's April 11, 1689, and something AMAZING is happening in England! A princess named Mary is about to become a queen — but here's the twist: she's going to rule TOGETHER with her husband William!
William and Mary were crowned King and Queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland on this very day. But wait, why is this so special? Well, it had never happened quite like this before!
Mary was already a princess, but her father had upset a LOT of people. So the English Parliament (that's like a big group of decision-makers) invited William and Mary to come from the Netherlands and take over!
Here's the really cool part: William and Mary had to make a deal with the people. They signed something called the Bill of Rights, which said the king and queen couldn't just do whatever they wanted. The people had rights too!
💡 Mary refused to rule alone even though she could have — she wanted to share power with William because she believed they made a better team together!
