What if a wolf raised two babies who grew up to build one of the greatest cities in history?
Rome's Birthday Party: A City Turns 2,777!
How twin brothers and a wolf started one of history's greatest cities
Ancient Romans threw a massive party every April 24th to celebrate Rome's legendary birthday!
Imagine throwing the biggest birthday party EVER — for a whole city! That's exactly what the ancient Romans did every April 24th to celebrate the founding of Rome!
According to legend, twin brothers named Romulus and Remus were raised by a mother wolf. Yes, a WOLF! When they grew up, they decided to build a city. But brothers fight sometimes, right? They couldn't agree on where to build it. Romulus chose one hill, Remus chose another.
Romulus won the argument and started building walls around his hill — the famous Palatine Hill. And guess what? He named the city after himself: ROME!
Every year on April 24th (which Romans called "Parilia"), the whole city celebrated with an amazing festival! People lit huge bonfires and jumped over them for good luck. Farmers decorated their animals with flowers and ribbons. Musicians played flutes while everyone danced in the streets!
💡 Romans believed jumping over fire during the Parilia festival would give them super good luck for the whole year — talk about playing with fire!
