What if you could sail to the edge of the map, where nobody had EVER been before?
The Day a King Got Lost and Found a Whole New World!
How Portugal's young king dreamed of exploring distant lands
Portuguese explorers sailed across oceans to discover new lands when spices were worth gold!
Picture this: It's April 25, 1507, and exciting news is spreading across Portugal! The king has just received an amazing gift — a brand new map showing lands that Europeans had NEVER seen before!
King Manuel I of Portugal was super proud. His explorers had been sailing across dangerous oceans, discovering new places, and making friends with people from faraway kingdoms. One of his bravest captains, Afonso de Albuquerque, was building trading posts all the way in India and Southeast Asia!
Can you imagine sailing for MONTHS without seeing land? These explorers were incredibly brave. They faced giant waves, ran out of fresh water, and didn't even have GPS! They used the stars to find their way — like having a giant nightlight map in the sky!
King Manuel loved learning about new discoveries so much that people called him "Manuel the Fortunate" (which means super lucky!). He collected spices, silks, and stories from places like India, Malaysia, and even China.
