Rome's Birthday Bash: A City Turns 2,777!
How ancient Romans threw the biggest birthday party ever for their amazing city
Ancient Romans threw epic birthday parties for their city with bonfires, parades, and feasts!
Imagine throwing a birthday party so big that people are STILL celebrating it over 2,000 years later! That's exactly what happened in ancient Rome!
Every year on April 21st (and continuing for days after, including April 28th), Romans celebrated the Parilia festival and the founding of their incredible city. According to legend, twin brothers named Romulus and Remus were raised by a WOLF! Yes, you read that right — a real wolf mother!
When the brothers grew up, they decided to build a city. After some disagreements, Romulus became the founder and first king of Rome in 753 BCE. He named the city after himself — pretty clever, right?
During the birthday celebrations, Romans would decorate their homes with flowers and colorful ribbons. They lit bonfires and jumped over the flames for good luck! Farmers would lead their sheep through special smoke to keep them healthy. There were parades, music, dancing, and SO much delicious food.
💡 According to legend, Rome's founder Romulus was raised by a wild wolf — and Romans were so proud of this story that they made wolf statues all over the city!
