What if you could build something so tall it touched the clouds?

The Empire State Building Opens Its Doors!

How the world's tallest building reached for the clouds

The Empire State Building opened in 1931 as the world's tallest building!

Imagine standing on the sidewalk in New York City on May 1, 1931, and looking UP... and UP... and UP! That's exactly what thousands of amazed people did when the Empire State Building officially opened!

This incredible skyscraper was a GIANT leap in science and engineering. At 1,454 feet tall (including its antenna), it was the tallest building in the entire world! That's taller than stacking 100 giraffes on top of each other!

But here's the really amazing part — it was built in just 410 days! How did they do it so fast? Scientists and engineers created an assembly line system, kind of like building a giant LEGO set. Over 3,400 workers showed up every single day, and the building grew about four-and-a-half floors every WEEK!

The builders used super-strong steel beams — about 60,000 tons of them! That's heavier than 10,000 elephants! They also installed 6,514 windows and 73 elevators.

💡 The Empire State Building has its own zip code — 10118 — because so much mail gets sent there every day!
