What if YOU could write the rules for an entire country?

The Day Poland Got Its First Constitution!

When a whole country decided to play fair with everyone

Poland created Europe's first constitution on May 3, 1791 — giving more people a voice!

Imagine you and your friends making a set of rules for the coolest club ever — rules that made sure EVERYONE got a voice! That's exactly what happened in Poland on May 3, 1791!

Poland was one of the first countries in Europe to create a constitution — a special document that explains how a country should be run fairly. And get this: it was only the SECOND written national constitution in the entire world! (The United States had just created theirs a few years earlier in 1787.)

King Stanisław August Poniatowski and a bunch of smart Polish leaders worked together on this amazing project. They wanted to make their country stronger and give more people a say in how things worked. Before this, only rich nobles could make all the decisions. Talk about unfair!

The new constitution said that regular people — merchants, craftsmen, and townspeople — should have more rights too. It was like upgrading from a game where only a few players could play to one where everyone got a turn!

💡 The Polish Constitution of May 3rd was written in secret because the leaders were worried that other countries might try to stop them!
