Napoleon Escapes! The Emperor Who Wouldn't Give Up

How one determined leader sailed away from his island prison

Napoleon was sent to a tiny island prison but escaped with 1,000 soldiers to rule France again!

Imagine being the ruler of almost all of Europe, and then suddenly... you're stuck on a tiny island! That's exactly what happened to Napoleon Bonaparte, one of history's most famous leaders.

Napoleon had been Emperor of France and conquered huge parts of Europe. But after losing some big battles, the other countries forced him to give up his crown in 1814. They sent him to live on Elba, a small island near Italy. It was like being sent to your room — forever!

But Napoleon had other plans. On May 5, 1814, he first arrived at Elba, and people thought he'd stay there quietly. WRONG! He spent his time planning an incredible escape.

Here's the amazing part: Napoleon didn't sneak away in the middle of the night. Nope! He boldly sailed away with about 1,000 loyal soldiers on seven ships! The guards couldn't believe their eyes.

💡 Napoleon was actually average height for his time — the idea that he was super short was made up by his enemies to make fun of him!
