What if you could design your own city and make it the coolest place on Earth?
The Founding of Constantinople: A Brand New Capital!
How one emperor built an amazing city that lasted over 1,000 years
Emperor Constantine built an awesome new capital city that became one of history's greatest!
Imagine being so powerful that you could build an ENTIRE CITY from scratch! That's exactly what Roman Emperor Constantine the Great did!
On May 11, 330 CE, Constantine officially dedicated his incredible new capital city called Constantinople. But here's the cool part — he built it right on top of an ancient Greek town called Byzantium!
Why did he pick this spot? Because it was PERFECT! The city sat on a peninsula surrounded by water on three sides, making it super hard for enemies to attack. Plus, it connected Europe and Asia like a bridge between two worlds!
Constantine wanted his city to be the greatest in the world. He filled it with amazing buildings, including a massive hippodrome (think of it like an ancient sports stadium!) that could hold 100,000 people. That's more than most football stadiums today!
💡 Constantinople's walls were so strong that the city wasn't conquered for over 1,100 years — that's longer than the entire history of the United States!
