What if splashing water could make you super lucky with money?

The Mercuralia: Rome's Wild Money Festival!

When Ancient Romans Splashed Water for Good Luck in Business

Romans splashed magical water everywhere on May 13th to get rich quick!

Imagine a day when everyone in ancient Rome rushed to a special well, scooped up water, and sprinkled it all over themselves, their shops, and even their money! That's exactly what happened every May 13th during the Mercuralia festival!

This awesome celebration honored Mercury, the super-speedy messenger god who wore winged sandals and a cool winged helmet. But Mercury wasn't just fast — he was also the god of merchants, travelers, and even tricksters!

On this special day, Roman shopkeepers and traders would close their stores and head to a sacred well near the Porta Capena gate. They'd fill special containers with water and carry laurel branches to splash the magical water everywhere!

Here's the really fun part: merchants would sprinkle this blessed water on their heads, their goods, and their ships. They believed Mercury would bring them tons of luck and protect them from bad deals. Some even sprinkled water on their coins!

💡 Mercury could supposedly travel between the world of the living and the dead — that's why he also guided souls to the underworld!
