The Day Galileo's Daughter Became a Nun!
How a brilliant scientist's daughter chose a life of kindness and letters
Galileo's daughter Virginia became a nun named Maria Celeste and was his biggest supporter!
On May 15, 1616, something special happened in Florence, Italy. A 16-year-old girl named Virginia Galilei officially became a nun, taking the new name Sister Maria Celeste!
But wait — who was her dad? Only the most famous scientist of his time: Galileo Galilei! You might know him as the guy who used telescopes to prove that Earth moves around the Sun (pretty wild, right?).
Virginia was born in 1600, and from a young age, she was super smart — just like her father! Back then, girls didn't go to university, so becoming a nun was one way clever women could read, write, and help their communities.
At the San Matteo convent in Arcetri, Virginia chose a beautiful new name. "Maria Celeste" means "Mary of the Heavens" — a sweet nod to her dad's love of studying the stars!
💡 Over 120 letters from Virginia to Galileo still exist today — she sent him cookies, jam, and even repaired his shirt collars!
