What if you could climb so high that airplanes flew BELOW you?

The Day Mount Everest Was Finally Conquered!

How a brave team reached the top of the world's tallest mountain

Climbers set up their highest camp ever on Everest, preparing to conquer the world's tallest peak!

On May 18, 1953, something amazing happened on the world's highest mountain! A team of climbers from Britain was making history on Mount Everest, the giant peak that touches the sky at 29,032 feet tall. That's higher than clouds fly!

For decades, adventurers had tried to reach the top of this enormous mountain in the Himalayas. But the freezing temperatures, howling winds, and thin air made it seem impossible. At that height, there's so little oxygen that your lungs work extra hard just to breathe!

On this special day, the expedition team was setting up their highest camp ever — Camp IX at about 27,900 feet. They were SO close to the summit! The brave climbers Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay from Nepal were preparing for their final push to the top.

The whole team worked together like superheroes. Some carried heavy oxygen tanks. Others set up tents in the freezing cold. Everyone had an important job!

💡 Mount Everest is so tall that if you stacked more than 160 Statues of Liberty on top of each other, they still wouldn't reach the summit!
