What if you could photograph something that swallows light like a hungry monster?
The Day a Real-Life Black Hole Was Photographed!
How scientists took the first-ever picture of something that swallows light itself
Scientists photographed the black hole at the center of our galaxy for the first time ever!
Imagine trying to take a photo of something that's INVISIBLE. Sounds impossible, right? That's exactly what scientists around the world decided to do — photograph a black hole!
Black holes are like cosmic vacuum cleaners in space. They're so powerful that not even light can escape their super-strong gravity. So how do you photograph something that doesn't let any light out?
Here's the clever trick: Scientists didn't photograph the black hole itself — they photographed its shadow! The glowing ring of super-hot gas swirling around the black hole creates a bright outline, making the dark center visible.
On May 19, 2022, scientists revealed the first-ever image of the black hole at the CENTER of our own Milky Way galaxy! They called it Sagittarius A* (pronounced 'A-star'). This cosmic monster is about 4 million times heavier than our Sun!
💡 The black hole Sagittarius A* is so massive that about 4 million Suns could fit inside it, yet it's smaller than the distance between Earth and the Sun!
