What if you discovered a golden city floating on a lake with pyramids taller than your school?

The Day Hernán Cortés Met the Aztec Emperor!

When two worlds collided in an ancient city on a lake

Spanish explorer Cortés entered the amazing Aztec lake-city of Tenochtitlan in 1520!

Imagine walking across a long bridge toward a magical city built right on top of a lake! That's exactly what happened on May 21, 1520, when Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés and his small group of soldiers entered the amazing Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan for the second time.

Tenochtitlan was one of the largest cities in the ENTIRE WORLD at that time — bigger than most cities in Europe! It had beautiful pyramids, floating gardens called chinampas where farmers grew food, and causeways (that's a fancy word for bridges) connecting the island city to the mainland.

Cortés had first arrived months earlier and met Emperor Montezuma II, the powerful ruler of the Aztec Empire. Montezuma lived in a palace so grand it had its own zoo with jaguars and eagles! The Aztecs had never seen horses before, and some thought the Spanish soldiers on horseback were magical creatures.

But things got complicated. Cortés had left the city and now returned to find his men in trouble. The meeting between these two very different worlds — Spanish explorers and the mighty Aztec civilization — would change history forever.

💡 The Aztec capital Tenochtitlan had about 200,000 people living there — that's like filling up two massive football stadiums!
