What if one tiny insect could change how we talk about computers forever?
The Day the First Computer Bug Was Found!
How a tiny moth changed computer history forever
A real moth got stuck in a computer in 1947, and that's why we call computer problems 'bugs'!
Picture this: It's September 9, 1947, and a team of brilliant scientists at Harvard University is working on one of the world's first computers — the massive Mark II! This computer was HUGE — it filled an entire room and weighed about 5 tons (that's heavier than an elephant!).
Suddenly, something went wrong. The computer started making mistakes, and nobody could figure out why. The team searched and searched until... wait for it... they found a REAL moth stuck inside the machine!
Grace Hopper, one of the most amazing computer pioneers ever, carefully removed the little insect and taped it into the computer's logbook. She wrote next to it: "First actual case of bug being found."
Before this, engineers already used the word "bug" to describe problems in machines. But this was the first REAL bug found in a computer! How funny is that?
💡 Grace Hopper lived to be 85 and earned the nickname 'Amazing Grace' — she even has a Navy destroyer ship named after her!
