What if your whole city shut down just to give a statue a bubble bath?
The Plynteria: Athens' Secret Temple Bath Day!
When the Greeks gave their goddess Athena a spa day!
Ancient Greeks had a yearly festival where they gave their goddess statue a bath!
Picture this: It's ancient Athens, and the whole city is getting ready for one of the strangest festivals ever. Today is the Plynteria — the day when the statue of the goddess Athena gets a bath!
Wait, they washed a STATUE? Yes! And it was a HUGE deal!
The Athenians believed their city was protected by Athena, the goddess of wisdom. Her wooden statue stood in the Parthenon temple, wearing beautiful robes and jewelry. But after a whole year, that statue needed some serious cleaning!
On May 29th, special priestesses called the Praxiergidai carefully removed Athena's fancy clothes and jewelry. Then they covered the statue so nobody could see it naked — even goddesses need privacy!
💡 The Athenians were so worried during the Plynteria that they wrapped the Parthenon's doors in rope to show Athena had temporarily 'left the building'!
