What if YOUR job was to keep a fire burning for your entire life?

The Vestalia: Rome's Super Special Fire Festival!

When Ancient Romans celebrated their sacred flame and ate yummy cakes

Ancient Romans threw a huge party for their sacred eternal flame and dressed up donkeys!

Imagine a fire that never, EVER goes out — not for hundreds and hundreds of years! That's exactly what the ancient Romans had in the Temple of Vesta in Rome!

Every year around June 2nd, Romans kicked off an amazing festival called the Vestalia. This wasn't just any party — it was a celebration of Vesta, the goddess of the hearth (that's the fireplace in your home where families gathered to stay warm and cook food).

But here's the cool part: the temple was guarded by special priestesses called the Vestal Virgins. These six women had one of the most important jobs in ALL of Rome — keeping the sacred flame burning! If the fire went out, Romans believed terrible things would happen to their city. Talk about pressure!

During the Vestalia, something magical happened. The inner part of the temple, which was normally SECRET and off-limits, was opened just for this festival. Roman women could finally enter and bring offerings to Vesta!

💡 The Vestal Virgins served for 30 years and lived in a fancy house with running water — super rare in ancient times!
