What if your pet got to wear a necklace made of bread and flowers?
The Vestalia Kitchen Party: Rome's Baking Day!
When ancient Roman bakers got a day off and donkeys wore flower necklaces!
Ancient Romans threw a party for bakers and put flower necklaces on donkeys!
Picture this: you're walking through ancient Rome and suddenly you see... donkeys wearing beautiful flower garlands around their necks! What's going on?
Welcome to June 9th, a super special day during the Vestalia festival when Romans honored the goddess Vesta AND celebrated their hardworking bakers and mill-donkeys!
Here's the cool part: Roman bakers worked REALLY hard. They ground grain into flour using heavy stone mills, and guess who helped turn those giant grinding stones? Donkeys! These strong animals walked in circles all day long, helping make the flour that became Rome's delicious bread.
On June 9th, the bakers finally got a break! The mills were decorated with flowers, and the donkeys got the day off too. Romans hung flower necklaces and little loaves of bread around the donkeys' necks to say "thank you" for all their hard work.
💡 Roman donkeys wore tiny loaves of bread as necklaces during this festival — like edible jewelry!
