What happens when a whole country gets so fed up with their king that they force him to follow the rules?

The Day the Magna Carta Changed Everything!

When angry nobles made a king promise to follow the rules

Angry nobles forced a mean king to sign a paper that said even kings must follow rules!

Picture this: It's June 15, 1215, and King John of England is NOT having a good day. He's standing in a soggy meadow called Runnymede, surrounded by a bunch of really angry nobles who are basically saying, 'Sign this paper, or else!'

King John had been a pretty terrible ruler. He raised taxes SO high that people could barely afford bread. He threw people in jail without any reason. He even stole people's land! The nobles had finally had enough.

So what was this magical piece of paper? It was called the Magna Carta, which is fancy Latin for 'Great Charter.' It was like a giant rule book that said even the KING had to follow the law!

Can you imagine? Before this, kings could do whatever they wanted. But the Magna Carta said things like: 'You can't throw someone in prison without a fair trial!' and 'You can't take people's stuff just because you feel like it!'

💡 The original Magna Carta was written in Latin on sheepskin parchment, and only FOUR copies from 1215 still exist today — they're worth millions of dollars!
