What if your whole city shut down for a week just to throw the biggest party ever?
The Ludi Apollinares: Rome's Epic Party for Apollo!
When Romans threw an amazing festival to make a sun god happy
Ancient Romans threw an epic yearly party with chariot races to keep the sun god Apollo happy!
Picture this: It's ancient Rome, and the whole city is throwing a MASSIVE party! No school, no work—just games, plays, and tons of fun. This was the Ludi Apollinares, a festival to honor Apollo, the god of the sun, music, and healing!
The festival started way back in 212 BCE during a really scary time. Rome was fighting a tough war, and people were worried. A special fortune-teller read ancient prophecies and told the Romans: "Hey, if you throw an awesome party for Apollo every year, things will get better!"
And guess what? The Romans LOVED this idea!
Every summer around June 6th through 13th, the city went wild with celebrations. The best part? Chariot races! Imagine the fastest horses you've ever seen, pulling chariots around a giant racetrack called the Circus Maximus. It could hold 250,000 people—that's like filling five football stadiums!
💡 The Circus Maximus where they held the chariot races was so huge that almost everyone in the entire city of Rome could watch at once—about 250,000 people!
