What if YOU were chosen to carry a mysterious sealed box through a secret tunnel at midnight?

The Arrephoria: Athens' Secret Night Adventure!

When young girls carried mysterious boxes through hidden tunnels

Greek girls carried mystery boxes through secret tunnels in the dark!

Imagine being chosen for the most mysterious mission in all of ancient Athens! Every year around June 17th, something super secret happened on top of the Acropolis — the famous hill where the Parthenon temple still stands today.

Four special girls, called Arrephoroi, lived on the Acropolis for a whole year. They were between 7 and 11 years old — probably YOUR age! These weren't just any kids. They came from the best families and had a very important job: helping to weave a special robe for the goddess Athena.

But here's where it gets REALLY cool! On the night of the Arrephoria festival, two of these girls received sealed baskets from Athena's priestess. What was inside? NOBODY KNEW! Not even the girls themselves!

Then came the spooky part. The girls had to walk down a secret underground passage in the dark, carrying their mysterious baskets. They went all the way to a hidden garden near the temple of Aphrodite at the bottom of the hill. There, they left their baskets and picked up something else — also secret! — to bring back up.

💡 The underground passage the Arrephoroi used was so secret that archaeologists only discovered traces of it in modern times — ancient Athenians kept it hidden for centuries!
