The Day Galileo Was Forced to Say the Earth Doesn't Move!

When a brilliant scientist had to pretend he was wrong to stay safe

Galileo was forced to say Earth doesn't move, but he knew the truth all along!

On June 22, 1633, something really unfair happened in Rome, Italy. The famous scientist Galileo Galilei was forced to say something he knew wasn't true!

Galileo was one of the smartest people who ever lived. He built amazing telescopes and discovered incredible things — like moons spinning around Jupiter and mountains on our Moon! But his biggest discovery got him in BIG trouble.

Galileo figured out that Earth moves around the Sun, not the other way around. Today, every kid knows this is true! But back then, powerful leaders in the Catholic Church said it was wrong. They believed Earth sat still in the middle of everything.

When Galileo was 69 years old, church leaders put him on trial. They said his ideas were dangerous and wrong. Poor Galileo had to kneel down and say, "I was wrong. The Earth doesn't move."

💡 Galileo's telescope was only about as powerful as cheap binoculars today, but he still discovered four of Jupiter's moons with it!
