What if your birthday party lasted EIGHT days and the whole city was invited?
The Panathenaea: Athens' Epic Birthday Bash for Athena!
When the whole city threw a massive party for their favorite goddess
Athens threw an eight-day birthday party for the goddess Athena with parades and games!
Picture this: It's ancient Athens, and the entire city is buzzing with excitement! Every year around late June, the Greeks threw an INCREDIBLE festival called the Panathenaea to celebrate the birthday of Athena, their awesome goddess of wisdom and warfare!
But this wasn't just any birthday party — it was the BIGGEST celebration in all of Athens! The festival lasted for EIGHT whole days. Can you imagine a week-long birthday party? Amazing, right?
Here's the coolest part: Every four years, they made it even MORE spectacular! This super-sized version was called the Great Panathenaea, and people traveled from all over Greece to join in.
The highlight was an enormous parade that wound through the city streets. Thousands of people marched together — young and old, rich and poor. They carried a brand-new robe called a peplos, which was woven by the cleverest girls in Athens. This special dress was a gift for the giant wooden statue of Athena in the Parthenon!
💡 Winners at the Panathenaea could take home up to 140 jars of precious olive oil — worth a small fortune in ancient times!
