What if the best way to study something in space was to CRASH into it?

The Day a Robot Crashed Into a Comet on Purpose!

NASA's wild plan to smash a spacecraft into a comet and see what happens

NASA purposely crashed a spacecraft into a comet to see what was inside — it was epic!

On July 4th, 2005, while Americans were watching fireworks, NASA created the most spectacular space fireworks EVER! They crashed a spacecraft called Deep Impact right into a comet named Tempel 1 — and they did it totally on purpose!

Here's the crazy plan: Scientists wanted to know what comets were made of on the INSIDE. But how do you peek inside something zooming through space at 23,000 miles per hour? You crash into it!

Deep Impact released a copper "impactor" about the size of a washing machine. This brave little robot flew straight toward the comet while cameras watched. KABOOM! It smashed into the comet's surface, creating a crater as big as a football field and as deep as a seven-story building!

The explosion was so bright that people on Earth could see it through telescopes! Scientists discovered amazing things: comets are much fluffier and dustier than they thought, kind of like dirty snow mixed with powdery sand. They also found water ice hiding inside!

💡 The copper impactor hit the comet with the same energy as 4.8 tons of dynamite, but the comet was so huge it barely even wobbled!
