Erasmus: The Man Who Used Books to Make the World Better
Erasmus was a superstar writer who taught Europe to think, laugh, and be kind!
On July 12, 1536, one of the most famous thinkers in history passed away in Basel, Switzerland. His name was Desiderius Erasmus, and he was like the superstar blogger of his time — except instead of the internet, he used books!
Erasmus was born in the Netherlands around 1466. From a young age, he LOVED learning. He could speak and write in Latin so beautifully that people all over Europe wanted to read his work. Imagine being so good at writing that kings, queens, and even the Pope wanted to be your pen pal!
Here's what made Erasmus super special: he believed that people should be kind to each other, no matter where they came from or what they believed. At a time when many people were arguing and fighting about religion, Erasmus kept saying, 'Hey everyone, let's just be nice and use our brains!'
He wrote a funny book called 'In Praise of Folly' that made fun of silly people who thought they were super important. It was like the world's first comedy bestseller! People couldn't stop talking about it.
💡 Erasmus wrote over 3,000 letters to famous people across Europe — he was basically running the world's first social network through the mail!
