When a tiny island trading post became a real British colony

Thomas Dongan became New York's first royal governor and gave colonists amazing new rights!

Picture this: It's July 26, 1683, and a ship pulls into the bustling harbor of New York. On board is Thomas Dongan, an Irish soldier about to become the FIRST royal governor of this exciting new place!

But wait — why was this such a big deal? Well, New York hadn't always been called New York! Just 19 years earlier, it was a Dutch colony called New Amsterdam. The English took it over and renamed it after the Duke of York (who would later become King James II).

Thomas Dongan had a super important job. He helped create something called the "Charter of Liberties" — basically, a rulebook that gave regular people rights! It said things like: everyone deserves a fair trial, and people should help make their own laws. Pretty cool, right?

Here's something amazing: Governor Dongan was actually Catholic at a time when that was really unusual for someone in power in English colonies. He believed in religious freedom and wanted people of ALL faiths to live together peacefully.
