Every year around July 19th through July 30th, Romans celebrated the Lucaria in a sacred grove between the Via Salaria and the Tiber River. But why would anyone throw a party in the woods? Here's the amazing story!

Long, long ago, when Rome was just getting started, the Romans were in BIG trouble. They had just lost a battle against some fierce neighbors called the Gauls. Where did the Romans hide to escape? The forest! The thick trees and bushes protected them like a natural fort.

From that day on, Romans never forgot that the woods saved their city. So they created the Lucaria to say "THANK YOU" to the trees! During the festival, people would clear brush, trim branches, and take care of the sacred grove. It was like a giant cleanup party mixed with a thank-you celebration!
