From wounded soldier to founder of one of history's most famous schools

A soldier's injury led him to start schools that now teach millions of kids worldwide!

On July 31, 1556, something amazing was happening in Rome. A man named Ignatius of Loyola took his last breath — but his incredible story was just beginning to spread around the world!

Here's the cool part: Ignatius started out as a soldier who LOVED fighting and dreaming of glory. But when a cannonball smashed his leg during a battle in 1521, everything changed. Ouch! While recovering in bed for months, he had nothing to read except books about saints and Jesus. And guess what? Those stories changed his entire life!

Instead of becoming a famous knight, Ignatius decided to help people learn. He gathered a group of friends and created something called the Society of Jesus, or "Jesuits" for short. These Jesuits became some of the greatest teachers in history!

The Jesuits built schools EVERYWHERE — from Italy to Japan to Brazil to the Philippines. They believed every kid deserved a great education. Today, there are over 2,000 Jesuit schools and universities around the world! Maybe you've even heard of Georgetown University or other famous Jesuit schools.
