What if you could watch your favorite music stars perform in your living room anytime you wanted?

The Day MTV Changed How We See Music!

When music videos rocked onto TV screens everywhere

MTV launched on August 1, 1981, and changed how the whole world experiences music!

On August 1, 1981, something totally new blasted onto television screens across America. At 12:01 AM, a brand-new channel called MTV (Music Television) started broadcasting, and nothing would ever be the same!

The very first thing people saw was a countdown and then—BOOM—a rocket launching! The first music video ever played was 'Video Killed the Radio Star' by a band called The Buggles. Pretty fitting, right?

Before MTV, if you wanted to see your favorite musicians, you had to go to a concert or hope they showed up on a TV talk show. But now? You could watch music videos 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! It was like having a concert in your living room!

MTV was a huge science and technology achievement. It used brand-new cable television technology and satellite signals to beam music videos into homes across the country. Engineers had to figure out how to broadcast non-stop without any breaks!

💡 The words 'Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll!' were the very first words ever spoken on MTV, right before that rocket launched!
