How scientists made a tiny star on Earth and changed energy forever

Scientists made a mini-sun on Earth by smashing atoms together at 100 million degrees!

On August 6, 1991, something INCREDIBLE happened at a laboratory in England. Scientists at the JET (Joint European Torus) facility created a burst of energy by smashing tiny atoms together — just like the sun does! It was the first time humans had ever controlled this kind of power, called nuclear fusion.

Here's how it works: Deep inside the sun, hydrogen atoms crash into each other SO hard that they stick together and make helium. When they do this, they release enormous amounts of energy — that's why the sun is so hot and bright!

The scientists at JET built a giant donut-shaped machine (yes, really!) called a tokamak. Inside this metal donut, they heated gas to 100 MILLION degrees — that's about six times hotter than the center of the sun! At these crazy temperatures, atoms zoom around and smash together, releasing energy.

On that historic day, the JET team produced about 1.7 megawatts of fusion power for nearly two seconds. That might not sound like much, but it was like taking a piece of the sun and making it work right here on Earth!
