NASA's car-sized Curiosity rover landed on Mars using a wild rocket crane in 2012!

On August 13, 2012, something incredible happened 154 million miles away from Earth. NASA's Curiosity rover had been cruising through space for over eight months, and now it was time for the scary part — landing on Mars!

Here's the wild thing: Curiosity was the size of a small car and weighed about as much as 15 adult humans. That's WAY too heavy for a parachute to slow down completely! So NASA engineers invented something totally bonkers called the "Sky Crane."

Picture this: A rocket-powered platform hovering above Mars, lowering a robot on cables like a giant arcade claw machine! Nobody had EVER tried anything like this before. Engineers called the landing "Seven Minutes of Terror" because it took seven minutes for Curiosity to land, but radio signals took 14 minutes to reach Earth. By the time NASA heard anything, the rover had either landed safely... or crashed!

When the signal finally arrived saying "Curiosity has landed," scientists at NASA jumped up and down, crying happy tears and hugging each other!
