Before this day, a HUGE part of Asia called British India was ruled by Britain. But the people there wanted to be free and make their own decisions. After years of peaceful protests and hard work, the British finally agreed to leave.

Here's where it gets interesting: the leaders decided to create TWO new countries instead of one! Pakistan was born on August 14th, and India became independent the very next day. It was like splitting a giant pizza, except way more complicated!
