Hans Christian Oersted was born in 1777 and later discovered electricity and magnets are connected!

On August 14, 1777, a baby boy named Hans Christian Oersted was born in a tiny town in Denmark. Little did anyone know that this curious kid would one day change how we understand electricity!

Hans grew up loving to ask questions about EVERYTHING. His dad was a pharmacist, so young Hans spent lots of time mixing potions and doing experiments. How cool is that?

When Hans became a professor, he made one of the most amazing discoveries in science history — totally by accident! One day in 1820, while teaching his students about electricity, he noticed something super weird. When he turned on an electric current near a compass, the compass needle MOVED!

"Wait, WHAT?!" Hans must have thought. He tried it again and again. Every time electricity flowed through the wire, the compass needle wiggled and pointed in a different direction!

💡 Oersted's discovery happened by accident during a class demonstration — he wasn't even looking for it! The unit of magnetic field strength called the 'oersted' is named after him.
