Scientists created neptunium, the first element heavier than anything found in nature!

Picture a bunch of scientists in California in 1940, working with a machine called a cyclotron. It was like a giant merry-go-round for tiny particles, spinning them faster and faster until they crashed into things!

On August 19, 1940, something incredible happened. Scientists Edwin McMillan and Philip Abelson were zapping uranium (a heavy metal found in rocks) with tiny particles called neutrons. When they looked at what happened, they couldn't believe their eyes. They had created a brand-new element that didn't exist anywhere in nature!

They named it neptunium, after the planet Neptune. Why? Because Neptune is the next planet after Uranus in our solar system, and neptunium comes right after uranium on the periodic table. Pretty clever, right?

This was a HUGE deal! For the first time ever, humans had created an element heavier than any found naturally on Earth. It was like being a wizard who could make new building blocks of the universe!
