What would YOU do if thousands of soldiers surrounded your home and demanded you surrender?

The Day a Brave Hungarian Countess Was Born!

Meet Ilona Zrínyi, the fearless mom who defended a castle against a whole army!

Ilona Zrínyi was a Hungarian countess who defended her castle for three years against a huge army!

On August 20, 1643, a baby girl named Ilona Zrínyi was born in Hungary. Little did anyone know she would grow up to become one of the bravest women in all of European history!

Ilona came from a family of heroes. Her great-grandfather had defended a castle so bravely that even his enemies wrote songs about him! But Ilona would become even MORE famous.

When Ilona grew up, she married a prince who fought for Hungary's freedom. After he died, she didn't give up — she picked up where he left off! In 1685, when a massive army came to take her castle at Munkács, Ilona said, "Not today!"

For THREE WHOLE YEARS, Ilona and her small group of defenders held that castle. Picture this: thousands of soldiers outside, cannons firing, and inside stood one determined mom protecting her two children and her people. She organized the defenses, kept everyone's spirits up, and refused to surrender!

💡 Ilona Zrínyi held her castle for so long that she ran out of regular cannonballs and started firing silver coins at the enemy instead!
