Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon became the first European to reach Australia in 1606!

Imagine sailing across the ocean, looking for valuable spices, and accidentally bumping into an entire continent that nobody in Europe knew existed! That's exactly what happened to Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon on August 24, 1606!

Willem was captain of a ship called the Duyfken (which means 'Little Dove' in Dutch). He worked for the famous Dutch East India Company, and his mission was to find new trading routes and treasures in the mysterious lands east of Asia.

After months of sailing through dangerous waters filled with coral reefs and storms, Willem and his crew spotted land! They had reached the western coast of Cape York Peninsula in what we now call Australia. This made Willem the FIRST European ever recorded to set foot on Australian soil!

But here's the funny thing — Willem didn't even realize he'd found a new continent! He thought it was just the southern part of New Guinea, another island nearby. Oops!
