The Day Google Was Born in a Garage!

How two college students changed how we find EVERYTHING

Two college students started Google in a garage on this day in 1998!

Picture this: It's September 4, 1998, and two nerdy college buddies are working in a messy garage in California. Larry Page and Sergey Brin had a wild dream — they wanted to organize ALL the information in the entire world!

Back then, finding stuff on the internet was like searching for a needle in a haystack — while blindfolded! Other search engines gave you thousands of useless results. But Larry and Sergey had a brilliant idea: What if the BEST websites were the ones that other websites talked about the most?

They called their invention Google — a super silly spelling of "googol," which is the number 1 followed by 100 zeros! That's more than all the grains of sand on every beach in the world!

Their first office? A garage they rented from a friend named Susan Wojcicki (who later became YouTube's boss — small world, right?). They had beanbag chairs, a ping pong table, and one very important thing: a really good idea.

💡 Google's first computer storage was held together with LEGO bricks because Larry Page thought they looked cool and were easy to expand!
