Every September, thousands of people would walk from Athens to a small town called Eleusis — that's about 14 miles, or like walking from one end of a big city to the other! The journey took several days, and people sang, danced, and carried sacred objects the whole way.

But here's the cool part: nobody really knows exactly what happened during the main ceremony! For almost 2,000 years, people kept the secret. What we DO know is that it honored Demeter, the goddess of farming and harvests, and her daughter Persephone.

The ancient Greeks believed this festival explained why we have seasons. According to their story, when Persephone was taken to the underworld, her mom Demeter was so sad that all the plants stopped growing — that's winter! When Persephone returned, flowers bloomed again — hello, spring!
