The Day Brazil Declared 'We're Free!' From Portugal

How a prince shouted by a river and created a whole new country!

A prince shouted 'Freedom or death!' by a river and created the country of Brazil!

Picture this: It's September 7, 1822, and Prince Pedro is riding his horse near a little river called Ipiranga in Brazil. He's been living in this amazing land of jungles, parrots, and beautiful beaches for years. But today, he gets a letter that makes him FURIOUS!

The letter says that Portugal wants Brazil to go back to being just a colony — like a kid who has to do whatever their parents say, forever! But Pedro had a different idea.

He jumped off his horse, ripped the Portuguese colors from his uniform, and raised his sword high in the air. Then he shouted something that would change history forever: "Independência ou morte!" That means "Independence or death!" in Portuguese.

Can you imagine? A prince choosing to break away from his own father's kingdom to lead a whole new country! The people of Brazil were SO excited. They had been wanting freedom for a long time.

💡 Brazil is the only country in South America where people speak Portuguese instead of Spanish — all because it was Portugal's colony before independence!
