Philip I, a German prince called the Landgrave of Hesse, had been fighting for years to protect people who wanted to worship in their own way. Back then, the powerful Emperor Charles V wanted everyone to follow the same religion. But Philip said, 'No way!'

On this day, a special peace agreement was signed that gave Philip and other Protestant leaders a chance to catch their breath. The emperor was busy fighting wars in other places, so he had to make deals with the German princes.

Philip was like the captain of a team! He helped create something called the Schmalkaldic League — a group of princes and cities that banded together to protect religious freedom. Think of it like a superhero team, but instead of capes, they wore fancy royal robes!
