What if YOU could travel to a mysterious land where nobody spoke your language — and become their friend anyway?
The Day Matteo Ricci Was Born!
The Amazing Italian Who Became a Chinese Scholar
Matteo Ricci traveled to China and became the first European to truly bridge East and West!
On October 6, 1552, a baby named Matteo Ricci was born in Italy who would grow up to do something incredible — he would travel all the way to China and become one of the first Europeans to truly learn Chinese language and culture!
Matteo was super curious about everything. He studied math, astronomy, and mapmaking. But his biggest adventure started when he decided to journey to the other side of the world — China!
Back then, very few Europeans had ever been to China, and most Chinese people had never met anyone from Europe. Imagine meeting someone from a completely different world!
Matteo didn't just visit — he stayed for almost 30 years! He learned to speak Chinese so well that he could write poetry in it. He wore Chinese robes, ate Chinese food, and made friends with scholars and even the emperor's court.
💡 Matteo Ricci had such an amazing memory that he could read a list of 500 Chinese characters once and repeat them perfectly — forwards AND backwards!
