What if wearing the right dress could make you the most famous woman in Europe?

The Day Eleanor of Toledo Was Born!

Meet the Spanish princess who became Italy's most fashionable duchess

Eleanor of Toledo was a fashion-loving Spanish duchess who basically ran Florence, Italy!

On October 11, 1522, a baby girl was born in Spain who would grow up to become one of the most powerful women in Italy!

Eleanor of Toledo was the daughter of a Spanish duke, and she grew up surrounded by fancy clothes, beautiful art, and important people. When she was just 17 years old, she married Cosimo I de' Medici, the ruler of Florence, Italy.

But Eleanor wasn't just a pretty face in a palace! She was SUPER smart about money and helped her husband run his entire kingdom. While Cosimo was busy with battles and politics, Eleanor managed the family's huge fortune. She was basically the CEO of the Medici family business!

Eleanor loved fashion SO much that she started trends that spread across all of Europe. Her favorite dress — a gorgeous gown with gold and silver threads — became so famous that the artist Bronzino painted her wearing it. That painting still hangs in a museum today, over 450 years later!

💡 Eleanor's famous portrait dress was so heavy with gold and silver thread that it probably weighed as much as a small dog!
