What if someone gave YOU land the size of a whole country just because they owed your dad money?
The Day William Penn Was Born!
Meet the Quaker who started Pennsylvania and believed everyone deserves freedom
William Penn traded a debt for a whole colony and created a land of religious freedom!
On October 14, 1644, a baby boy was born in London, England, who would grow up to change the world in an amazing way. His name was William Penn!
William's dad was a famous admiral in the British Navy, and everyone expected young William to become a wealthy gentleman. But William had bigger dreams — he wanted to create a place where EVERYONE could worship God however they wanted!
You see, back then, people could get thrown in jail just for praying differently than the king said they should. William became a Quaker — a group of Christians who believed all people were equal. He was thrown in prison several times just for his beliefs! Can you imagine going to jail for going to the wrong church?
But here's where it gets really cool. King Charles II owed William's dad a TON of money. When his dad died, William made an incredible deal: instead of the money, he asked for LAND in America! The king said yes and gave him a huge chunk of territory — almost as big as the whole country of England!
💡 Pennsylvania was so popular that it grew faster than any other American colony — thousands of people moved there in just a few years because they heard everyone was welcome!
