Meet the daring writer who disguised herself to visit forbidden lands
Alexandra David-Néel disguised herself to sneak into forbidden Tibet at age 55!
On October 18, 1868, a baby girl named Alexandra David was born in Paris, France. But this wasn't going to be any ordinary girl — she would grow up to become one of the most amazing adventurers in history!
Alexandra David-Néel did something incredible: she became the first European woman to sneak into the forbidden city of Lhasa in Tibet! Back then, Tibet was completely closed to outsiders. No foreigners allowed — period!
But did that stop Alexandra? Nope! She was SO curious about Buddhism and Asian cultures that she learned multiple languages, including Tibetan. She studied with wise monks and traveled through mountains so high they touched the clouds.
Here's the really wild part: to get into Lhasa, she disguised herself as a poor Tibetan pilgrim! She covered her face with soot and yak grease, wore raggedy clothes, and walked for MONTHS through freezing mountain passes. She was over 50 years old when she did this — that's probably older than your grandparents!
💡 Alexandra traveled over 8,000 miles through Asia, mostly on foot, and once walked from China to India across the Himalayan mountains!
