What if your favorite lunch food was invented by someone who just couldn't stop playing games?
The Day John Montagu Invented the Sandwich!
How a busy card player changed lunchtime forever
A card-loving Earl gave us the sandwich because he was too busy gaming to eat properly!
Picture this: It's November 3rd, 1718, and a baby boy named John Montagu is born in England. Little does anyone know that this tiny baby will grow up to accidentally invent one of the world's most popular foods!
John became the 4th Earl of Sandwich (yes, that's a real place in England!). He was super busy — he worked in the government and LOVED playing card games. Like, really loved them. He would play for hours and hours without stopping!
Here's where it gets delicious. Around 1762, John was so into his card game that he didn't want to stop for dinner. But he was hungry! So he had a brilliant idea: "Put some meat between two slices of bread!" That way, he could eat with one hand and keep playing cards with the other. His fingers wouldn't get greasy, and the cards would stay clean. Genius!
Other people saw this and said, "I'll have the same as Sandwich!" And just like that, a new food was born!
💡 The town of Sandwich in England is over 1,400 years old — way older than the food named after it! You can still visit it today.
